Downtown Streetscape Program - Pittsfield, MA

    • Streetscape improvements join function and design to strengthen communities.

    • BSC Group is providing planning and design services for the development and implementation of a comprehensive streetscape improvement program for historic downtown Pittsfield. The project purpose is to plan and design streetscape improvements to a segment of Main Street, which will serve as the foundation for the establishment of streetscape guidelines for future improvements.

Serving as a gateway to the heavily-touristed Berkshires, Pittsfield is promoting the project as a catalyst for economic growth. Historic structures such as the Colonial Theatre and buildings within the Park Square Historic District are highlighted and framed by attractive open spaces and a pedestrian network that invites residents, employees and visitors to stroll the downtown area. BSC has also provided traffic engineering services and parking lot design to make the downtown area safer and friendlier for visitors. BSC’s approach incorporates the following:

      • Streetscape Design - The industrial City had previously launched several downtown revitalization efforts, including a successful storefront arts program. BSC Group built upon these programs to recommend streetscape enhancements, such as decorative pavers, period lighting, trees, planters and planting areas, street furnishings, public art, and creative public signage and plaques that reflect the heritage, culture, people and natural beauty of Pittsfield.
      • Public Participation - The project has involved intense coordination with local residents, as well as several organizations and departments within the City, such as the Mayor’s Office, Community Development Department, Cultural Office, Department of Public Works, Chamber of Commerce, and the Streetscape Advisory Committee. Public meetings generated community involvement, particularly within the downtown business community. BSC worked collaboratively with these stakeholders to integrate plantings and lighting along the corridor, while preserving views to businesses and historic landmarks.
