BSC Group has serviced MassHighway bridges under three separate on-call contracts for statewide inspection, rating, and rehabilitation statewide. The assignments have included a full range bridge types, including simple span, multi-span continuous, rigid frame and truss structures, as well as a variety of materials, including concrete, steel, timber and masonry structures.

Statewide Bridge Inspections – BSC collected inspection data in accordance with NBIS requirements, and all fatigue prone and fracture critical elements were identified. Reports summarized conditions and prioritized future repairs. Many inspections involved the preparation of traffic maintenance plans, as well as the use of equipment such as bucket trucks, barge-mounted aerial lifts, underbridge access vehicles and rigging to assure that BSC performed hands-on inspection of every element.

Statewide Bridge Ratings – BSC provided bridge analysis and rating services for a full range of bridge types. As part of the rating process, BSC Group visited each structure to identify potential changes that may have occurred since the latest inspection. Inspection calculations were then performed using the AASHTO Virtis bridge load rating system, with complicated structural systems analyzed utilizing STAAD modeling. BSC prepared a report for each bridge, providing the rationale behind the calculations, along with recommendations for maintaining/improving the structural capacities.

Statewide Bridge Rehabilitation Services – BSC Group designed emergency repairs, machinery upgrades, and routine maintenance programs for MassHighway bridges throughout the state. Representative project types include stringer, joint, and tread replacement, deck slab modifications, pier repairs, and repair of moveable bridges.
