Central Street Gateway - Worcester, MA

    • Roadway and intersection improvements were coordinated with development projects to support regeneration of a vibrant downtown area.

    • BSC Group designed improvements to Worcester’s Central Street to provide an attractive gateway to the City’s downtown area from Interstate 290, while also improving traffic conditions for a number of new developments, including Medical City, the Worcester Convention Center, a new municipal parking garage, and the former Worcester Common Outlet Mall.

BSC provided comprehensive planning and design services, including transportation planning and roadway design, environmental permitting, and landscape architecture to support the project from early planning through final construction.

      • Traffic Engineering – Comprehensive traffic engineering included traffic, pedestrian flow and parking studies, along with construction-phase traffic management. Designs involved traffic signage, coordination of 15 signalized intersections into an inconnected closed-loop system, and improved parking and pedestrian flow access.
      • Highway Design – BSC provided conceptual through final design and contract documents for nearly two miles of roadway construction. The project required modifications to four I-290 access ramps and preparation of project justification reports to combine two westbound ramps into one ramp.
      • Water Quality - BSC proactively avoided permitting challenges by incorporating a variety of water quality improvements into the project design, including separating previously combined sewer systems and reducing stormwater flows to the Mill Brook Conduit.
      • Environmental Permitting and Documentation – This project required the filing of Draft and Final Environmental Impact Reports for the Gateway/Medical City project. BSC also prepared a Categorical Exclusion checklist and successfully demonstrated that Phase I of the project did not require a formal Environmental Assessment document under NEPA. Additional permitting by BSC Group included the preparation of Notices of Intent to the Worcester Conservation Commission.
