    • Campus improvements require a collaborative design approach, understanding of university dynamics, and sensitivity to the academic calendar.

    • BSC Group worked with the University of Massachusetts Building Authority and a team of engineers and architects to site, design and construct a new Central Heating Plant on the Amherst campus. The new cogeneration facility will provide steam heat for the campus and will produce approximately 10 MW at 13.8 kV to meet campus base electrical load requirements.

BSC provided integrated services, including civil/site planning and engineering, landscape architecture, traffic management, and environmental permitting to support all phases of project development.

      • Site Selection and Civil Engineering – BSC Group prepared site development plans for each of four potential sites and provided a comparison of site and environmental issues for the alternative development options. Upon selecting the Derby Athletic Track as the preferred site, BSC collaborated to develop site plans and specifications to prepare and preload the site. Because the site is close to the Mill River, BSC designed a stormwater management plan for erosion and sedimentation control to protect the resource area. BSC also prepared a Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plan to comply with National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) Phase II requirements.

      • Landscape Architecture – BSC’s landscape architects prepared landscape and hardscape improvements to enhance the area around the new Central Heating Plant, as well as other areas that were affected by the project, including Mullins Plaza.  Improvements included new bus stops, realigned walkways, planters and seating areas. Design considerations included pedestrian movement and safety, the creation of common gathering areas, and handicap accessibility.
