Learning | Sophia Gordon Residence Hall, Tufts University - Medford, MA |
BSC, as part of a project team led by William Rawn Associates, Architects, provided civil/site engineering and permitting support for the construction of a new 126-bed dormitory that will house fourth-year students and that is Tufts’ first “green” building.
Through measures such as motion sensors, dual-flush toilets, and rooftop solar thermal and photovoltaic arrays, Sophia Gordon Hall is expected to use 30 percent less energy and 30 percent less water than would a conventionally designed building, and has achieved a LEED Silver certification.
BSC designed a stormwater management system that exceeds the requirements of the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection Stormwater Management Policy and includes a reduction in peak stormwater runoff. BSC was also responsible for the design of site utilities, grading and drainage, site layout, the preparation of permitting and construction documents, and construction phase support.
