Main Street Roadway and Streetscape Improvements - Bridgeport, CT

BSC Group provided planning and design of roadway and streetscape improvements for a 2.5-mile section of Main Street in Bridgeport. Project objectives include developing a comprehensive corridor study to determine roadway and sidewalk deficiencies and needs, as well as the design of recommended solutions.

The Main Street corridor is an active and vibrant commercial area, populated by a variety of local businesses. The City sought to provide opportunities for economic growth by enhancing the commercial character through traffic and streetscape improvements. Final designs include:

• Traffic Improvements – BSC’s traffic engineers enhanced vehicular and pedestrian safety by formalizing driveways and reducing access points onto the roadway. Paved crosswalks provide safe crossing areas, while clearly defined on-street parking bays and bump-outs calm traffic.

• Streetscape Enhancements – A key part of the roadway improvement project includes the design of streetscape enhancements, such as benches, trees, and ornamental lighting. Low-maintenance garden and planting areas complement these features.

• Sustainable Design – BSC’s design incorporated low impact development measures to naturally treat stormwater. Pervious pavers were used for parking areas, reducing stormwater runoff. Additionally, rain gardens were planted with native species to absorb rain water while providing an attractive amenity.
