National Grid I135/J136 Utility Road Project

As part of its on-call licensing and permitting contract with National Grid, BSC provided ecological services to support the design and construction of a permanent utility-grade road along the I135N and J136N transmission lines in Winchendon, Massachusetts. The team completed wetland delineation and GPS survey, GIS mapping of wetlands and environmental constraints, and prepared local, state, and federal permit plans.

BSC also guided wetland restoration and creation activities, implementing an innovative wetland replication approach that conserved soil carbon, enhanced drought resilience, and accelerated the establishment of wetland vegetation by transferring intact soil profiles and native vegetation from the impact area to the restoration site. The approach also reduced exposed soil, eliminated the need to stockpile soils, decreased construction time, minimized the amount of supplemental soil and plant material required, and reduced carbon emissions associated with transporting those materials.
