Agawam Energy Center — Battery Energy Storage System (BESS)
The Agawam Energy Center BESS project will transform a former industrial lumber yard into a clean energy facility serving western Massachusetts. Located on a 17.2-acre industrial site in Agawam, the project features a 250 MW, 4-hour lithium-ion battery storage system designed to strengthen grid reliability and support a lower-carbon energy future. The project also benefits from a short interconnection to a nearby Eversource substation, minimizing new infrastructure needs.
BSC provided environmental review and permitting services, including wetland delineation, rare species habitat assessment, survey-grade GPS mapping, and stormwater management support. BSC also prepared key local and state permitting filings and led the effort to secure Site Plan Approval from the Town of Agawam. Coordination with Town staff, peer reviewers, and public outreach efforts helped streamline the permitting process and support a smoother local review.
Field investigations confirmed that an on-site pond previously identified as a potential vernal pool did not meet regulatory criteria, reducing permitting constraints and helping keep the project on schedule. Overall, the project repurposes a previously disturbed site into a critical clean energy asset supporting Massachusetts’ net zero carbon goals.
