Trail Design & Development: BSC Advances Multi-Use Trail Projects Across New England

BSC Group continues to help communities expand access to safe, connected outdoor infrastructure through innovative trail design and development.

Our multidisciplinary team works with municipalities, regional agencies, and state partners to plan and deliver multi-use pathways that support mobility, recreation, and environmental stewardship.

From early planning and funding strategies to permitting, engineering, and construction oversight, BSC guides clients through every stage of trail development. By integrating transportation engineering, ecological science, accessibility compliance, and climate resilience, we help communities transform underutilized corridors into vibrant public assets.

Haggetts Pond Rail Trail | Andover, Massachusetts

BSC partnered with the Town of Andover to advance the Haggetts Pond Rail Trail, a multi-use pathway constructed along an abandoned rail corridor. The project secured $500,000 in MassTrails funding and includes planning, design, permitting, and construction oversight services.

The project features an 8-foot-wide asphalt multi-use accessible trail and boardwalk, a new trailhead parking area, and a scenic overlook along Haggetts Pond. BSC also supported environmental permitting and provided monitoring during construction to ensure compliance with Massachusetts Endangered Species Act requirements.

Clippership Connector | Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation

BSC is supporting the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation in designing the Clippership Connector, a 3,000-foot accessible riverfront trail linking Clippership Drive and Riverbend Park.

The project integrates green infrastructure strategies such as native plantings, permeable surfaces, and stormwater management systems to enhance the Mystic River corridor. The design also improves cyclist safety by providing off-road shared use path connection from Medford Center to Mystic River Reservation trails network.

Naugatuck River Greenway Study | Naugatuck Valley Council of Governments

BSC worked with the Naugatuck Valley Council of Governments to evaluate routing and design alternatives for a 10-mile segment of the Naugatuck River Greenway, part of a planned 44-mile regional trail system connecting 11 communities.

The project involved extensive stakeholder collaboration and technical analysis to establish a preferred route alignment and develop a trail prioritization matrix that evaluates access, cost, environmental considerations, and future implementation strategies.
