Once a long vacant site, Wilson Gateway Park is now a vibrant public destination, strengthening neighborhood identity and announcing a renewed sense of arrival to the Town of Windsor.

A new civic gateway for Windsor’s Wilson neighborhood

Located along Windsor Avenue (Route 159), Wilson Gateway Park transforms a neglected parcel into a 7-acre, multi-functional public space that supports civic life, recreation, and ecological performance. More than a park, it is a visible statement of pride and reinvestment, reshaping the experience of a corridor long dominated by traffic into one define by people.

Designed for daily life and big community moments

The park is organized as a connected set of destinations that welcome all ages and activity levels. Key features include a children’s play area, central plaza, and grand lawn that anchor everyday use and community gatherings alike. A kinetic wind sculpture garden and community pavilion add a distinctive cultural identity while a loop of fitness paths, shaded seating, and comfortable places to pause support everything from a lunchtime walk to weekend celebrations.

As the project’s statement of significance notes, the design creates a flexible, multi-use public realm that seamlessly accommodates both daily activity and large community events.

Ecological restoration that adds beauty and resilience

Wilson Gateway Park also strengthens environmental performance through targeted ecological improvements along Decker’s Brook. Enhancements to stormwater management and native habitat restoration increase resilience while adding visual richness. The hillside walk and overlook reconnect visitors to the brook, renewing the community’s relationship with this overlooked asset.

Built to last with smart, municipal-friendly maintenance

Durable detailing in paving, lighting, and site furnishings establishes a cohesive identity designed to perform for years to come. The planting strategy provides year-round interest while remaining realistic for municipal maintenance: leveraging native and adaptive species to reduce water and fertilizer needs, and prioritizing long lasting, low-maintenance materials.

High impact, low drama for the maintenance team. Always a win.

Recognition for design excellence and community impact

The CT ASLA Merit Award honors projects that elevate the profession and serve communities with purpose. Wilson Gateway Park exemplifies how landscape architecture can advance sustainability, social equity, and civic life creating a safer, more walkable public realm that connects neighborhoods, civic spaces and commercial areas.
