Cape & Gravel Photovoltaic System

BSC provided integrated civil, environmental, and ecological engineering and land surveying services to support the design and permitting of a large-scale, ground-mounted solar photovoltaic system for NextGrid, Inc. The project transformed a former wood waste processing facility on an 89-acre site that includes a gravel pit, active sand and gravel operations, and sensitive habitat areas into a renewable energy-generating property. The development required a careful balance between renewable energy goals, environmental preservation, and continued industrial use of the site.

BSC supported this balance by limiting tree clearing, protecting reclaimed gravel pit slopes and priority habitat areas, and navigating a complex dual-use permitting framework that allows sand and gravel operations to continue alongside solar development. The team delivered site layout, grading, utility, and stormwater design; supported extensive state and local permitting; and developed innovative design solutions, including canopy-mounted solar structures that maintain construction vehicle access and finished product storage. Site improvements included removal of impervious surfaces, enhanced vegetation, and new stormwater management systems that improve drainage, water quality, and groundwater recharge in full compliance with MassDEP and Town of Brewster requirements.
