BSC scientists partnered with the Connecticut Department of Agriculture (DoAg) to support farmland restoration, resiliency, and preservation efforts across the state. As part of this collaboration, BSC soil scientists provided technical oversight for proposed farmland restoration projects, ensuring solutions that were both ecologically sustainable and financially viable for Connecticut farmers.
On behalf of DoAg, BSC successfully oversaw 20 farmland restoration projects associated with the Department’s grant program. Our team worked directly with awarded farmers to review proposed restoration activities at each farm and prepared project-specific farmland restoration plans required for grant approval. This process provided DoAg with assurance that restoration work protected critical natural resources while restoring land of high agricultural value.
BSC is currently supporting DoAg’s newer farmland resiliency program, working with seven farms to increase the long-term resiliency of their operations and reduce vulnerability to extreme weather events.
BSC’s approach integrated soil science and wetland expertise to maintain a balance between productive agriculture and the preservation of Inland Wetlands and Watercourses, while providing creative, innovative, and practical solutions tailored to each farm site.
In addition, BSC’s survey team provided professional land surveying services for DoAg’s Farmland Preservation Program. At Campion Bittersweet Farm in Hampton, Connecticut, BSC completed boundary determinations for 47 acres of preserved farmland and the remaining approximately 120 acres of the original farm.
Survey services included comprehensive records research, review of abutting landowners, identification of property rights and recent encroachments, and the setting of missing boundary monuments. BSC also prepared legal descriptions to support the conveyance of development rights, ensuring full compliance with program requirements and long-term farmland protection.
