EcoProtect: Nature-Based Solutions for Flooding and Heat

The EcoProtect: Nature-Based Solutions for Flooding and Heat project helped the Town of Navassa, North Carolina, identify and prioritize equitable strategies to address flooding, extreme heat, and development pressures. Building on the Town’s Resilience Strategy, BSC integrated GIS-based vulnerability analysis with a community-centered engagement process tailored to a historically underserved community within the Gullah Geechee Heritage Corridor.

Working closely with local stakeholders, BSC developed accessible planning tools and implementation guidance, including an ESRI-based data viewer, feasibility matrix, and detailed memos for 10 priority nature-based solution projects. The project provides Navassa with a clear path toward implementation and strengthens the Town’s capacity to advance culturally informed, long-term climate resilience.
