Campground at Horseneck Beach State Reservation Renovation

BSC provided survey, engineering, landscape, and ecological services for the complete renovation of the Campground at Horseneck Beach State Reservation in Westport, MA. Horseneck Beach is one of DCR’s most popular campgrounds drawing thousands of visitors every year, including campers who have stayed there annually for generations. BSC’s work included renovating the site layout to improve RV parking and circulation, electrification of 69 of the 100 sites, construction of a new playground and pavilion, renovation of the basketball and volleyball courts, as well as dune restoration with the planting of over 4,000 beach grass roots. As Horseneck Beach is a nesting habitat for the endangered piping plover, BSC also designed a unique guardrail and barrier system to protect plovers from walking into the parking lot and driveway. In addition to the work at the campground, improvements were made to the area around the beach administration building. These included improved beach access for maintenance and emergency vehicles, restoration of dune areas, repaving of an existing one-mile beach access road/bike/pedestrian trail, and the installation of an outdoor fitness area.
