The Korean Church of Boston’s expansion plans were recently awarded the 2008 Architect Magazine Progressive Architecture award. Brian Healy Architects’ design of a children’s chapel and community center for the Brookline church was recognized for its careful blending of contemporary architecture with the church’s original 1950’s structure.
BSC Group provided civil engineering and landscape architecture services to support the project, which involved the creation of a 2,400 sf children’s chapel and an interior courtyard. BSC’s landscape design included a soft-surface play area to complement the children’s chapel, as well as landscape treatments for the interior courtyard and front plaza. Especially challenging was the need to resolve a nine-foot grade change to remove the existing plinth and creating a welcoming entrance for the community.
