In honor of World Landscape Architecture Month, we celebrate the transformative power of public open spaces.
Public open spaces are more than greenery — they’re the heart of community life. Whether for play or pause, resilience or recreation, these places are thoughtfully designed with purpose, care, and the people who bring them to life.
At BSC, we’re proud to work with communities to shape inclusive, sustainable, and vibrant public spaces like these:
Clifford Park Improvements – Boston, MA
Through a collaborative public engagement process, BSC designed inclusive upgrades to Clifford Park, featuring new play areas, a dog park, courts, and athletic fields. Our team also integrated climate resilience through heat mitigation strategies and green stormwater infrastructure — ensuring the park serves the community today and tomorrow.
Batterson Park Master Plan – Farmington/New Britain, CT
This 266-acre site reimagines public open space around a 140-acre man-made pond. BSC’s visionary master plan includes trails, picnic areas, playgrounds, waterfront activities, and sustainability initiatives like wildlife corridors and green infrastructure — all shaped by community input. The goal? A park that’s equal parts nature preserve, recreation destination, and community hub.
Mountain View Cemetery Expansion – Shrewsbury, MA
This unique plan blends cemetery needs with passive recreation in the spirit of traditional rural cemeteries. The expansion maintains Prospect Park’s peaceful, park-like feel while introducing trails, bike paths, open spaces, and modern amenities — thoughtfully balancing remembrance, reflection, and recreation.
Landscape Architects bring these spaces to life — making them work for people, for the environment, and for future generations. Through thoughtful planning and creative design, we help create places where communities can connect, thrive, and grow.
